Sharing Christ with a Child
THE most important thing that we do on a Mission Trip is to SHARE CHRIST with an orphan or hurting child. This is done gently when the child or other individual expresses interest in knowing more about how to accept Him. Don’t argue with a child or tear down their religion. Instead, be open to questions to clear up misconception. They may have accepted Christ through a previous ministry trip, but are now looking for discipleship and learning more about Christianity.
As you share, consider the following tips and be prepared at any time to sit and share the Gospel!
Prepare through Prayer – Each day, begin by praying for guidance and divine opportunities to share your faith with the kids or the workers at your ministry site.
Build a Relationship – The first thing you want to do with any child you witness to is build a relationship of trust with that child. This sometimes takes time. It may not be accomplished in one visit. Russians highly value relationships. Having “tea” in Russia is a great way to start to build a relationship.
Keep it Simple – It’s important to keep the message simple and the gospel presented in about 5-10 minutes. Remember to keep it age appropriate for the child you are witnessing to. You will also need to keep it simple as you will need to have the translator translate each sentence.
Be Positive – You will want to emphasize the benefits of believing in Jesus Christ rather than the do’s and don’ts of Christian living.
Your Experience – Tell a parable (story) from your own life of how God has worked through you. Children will probably remember that story and this will help build a relationship.
Don’t Use “Church” words – avoid words like “Being Saved”, “Repent”, “Sin”, “Asking Jesus to come into your heart”. Instead use “Choose to follow Jesus”, “Saying you are sorry”, “Doing something wrong”, and “Ask Jesus to be with you always and be your constant friend”.
Get their Name – After you complete your presentation and prayer, be sure to get their name, age and group number or leaders name for follow-up by others later.
