Photography Guidelines
Orphans, children in shelters, and young people in the transition homes are often visited by foreigners (including us) who take many pictures to remember them. However, these pictures can rob away some of their identity and dignity.
Photographs play an important role as an aid to fundraising and encouraging others to participate in future SAC mission trips. To ensure that SAC maintains a child focused attitude, the following guidelines have been established to protect the child’s dignity and privacy. It also gives them a choice and will generate respect for us as a group by respecting their wishes.
In addition, photography is restricted in several places in Russia. Take caution in taking pictures by adhering to these guidelines.
Ask permission first before photographing children or workers in the ministry sites.
Photographs taken in “The Harbor” ministry site need to be taken by the staff so they can control content. Trip participants are not allowed to take photographs.
If a child refuses to have their picture taken, respect their wish and warn them if you are taking a distant group shot so they can choose to avoid the picture.
Children participating in the SAC ministry at the ministry sites should not have photography disrupting the activities of the group leader.
If you are taking pictures with a digital camera, and the child has agreed to let you take their picture, be sure to show them the picture after it is taken.
Never take pictures inside any building having to do with public transportation. This includes the metro system, train stations, and airports.
Never take pictures of police officers, security personnel, or public officials without their permission.
Never take pictures inside shops or malls.
Digital cameras and video cameras over $500 should be declared on your Customs Form when you enter the country. Record the serial numbers and put them in a separate place that is carried with you on the trip.
Film cameras and film should be carried in your carry-on luggage. X-rays for checked luggage in airports may damage your film.
When you return home, please get a CD made with your developing. SAC would like to make a copy of the pictures on CD for future use.
